Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the practice questions?

Questions cover the topics in your state’s official driver’s handbook, and in September 2026 we checked the answers in every state’s tests against its handbook. If you spot a mistake, use the Report a mistake link under any question. They’re practice questions, not the official exam, so read your handbook too.

Do I need to register?

No. All practice tests on DrivingPracticeTests.com are completely free to access without creating an account.

How many questions are on the DMV test?

It varies by state. Among states that publish a number, it ranges from 18 questions (Pennsylvania) to 50 (Florida, New Jersey and Wisconsin). Each state page gives the real test’s question count and passing score wherever the state publishes them.

Is the permit test hard?

It is a multiple-choice test on what is in your state's driver handbook, so how hard it feels depends mostly on how well you have studied it. In 36 of the 50 states and D.C., the main knowledge test needs 80%, and so does Michigan's adult test. Pass marks range from 70% (New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Texas and Michigan's teen exam) to 88% (Maryland), and Virginia requires every one of its 10 road sign questions to be right. Read your state's handbook, take practice tests until you score comfortably above the pass mark, and check your state page for the exact number of questions and the score you need.

How many questions can you miss on the permit test?

It depends on your state. Most states require 80%, so you can miss 6 questions on a 30-question test or 5 on a 25-question test. Some are stricter: Maryland requires 22 of 25 (88%) and Pennsylvania 15 of 18. Others are lower, like Texas at 70% (21 of 30). Your state page lists the exact number you need.
